Bill on cremation of corpses, two others pass 1st reading

LAGOS — Bills for land to establish the Lagos State House of Assembly Budget and Legislative Research Office; Local Government system, Establishment and Administration of Local Government Councils, as well as for voluntary cremation of corpses and unclaimed corpses in the state have passed through the first reading at the state House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, a member of the House, Mrs. Olatunji Edet, has called for an enquiry into a report before the House over a petition on the unlawful termination of appointment, non-remittance of tax deducted to appropriate authorities and uncompleted payment of dues under staff Pension Board in the state.

The House took the first reading on the three bills, even as it decried the state of public toilets in the state, which members described as an eye sore to the development of the state.

The lawmakers called on the Ministries of Health and Information and Strategy to embark on public enlightenment campaigns on the dangers associated with the unhygienic use of public toilets.

The lawmakers, who resumed after Christmas and New Year break, directed Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas to construct and maintain functional and hygienic toilets in their localities and enforce relevant environmental laws/regulations against defaulters, who fail to observe acceptable hygiene standards.

Moving the motion, Chairman, Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Omotayo Oduntan, observed that there was need for the state government to address the situation to forestall the outbreak of cholera, diarrhoea and other related disease due to the poor standards of our public toilets.
