Jos – The Special Task Force on Revenue Generation set up by Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State to shore up internally-generated revenue, IGR, in the state has pledged commitment to meeting the one billion naira monthly target set by the state government.

Chairman of the task force, Chief John Mankilik, who gave the assurance while addressing journalists, said steps were being taken to plug tax leakages and ensure that all taxes collected are paid into the state’s consolidated revenue account.

He said the task force had commenced interaction with various stakeholders to solicit their cooperation in harnessing available revenue sources, noting that the state could no longer rely on statutory revenue allocation from the federation account if it is to meet the yearnings of the people.

Mankilik said: “Plateau people are hereby reminded of the ever changing socio-political and economic environment which does not give comfort to over-reliance on oil revenues by our governments (local and state).

“Besides, the clamour by oil-producing states for the review of the country’s derivation policy and the dynamics of the international oil market do not make it any easier for us to rely on oil revenues for our activities.

“Time has come for a change of heart, because it is now painfully clear that the state can no longer continue to rely on the amount it gets from the Federation Account.”
